Óc Eo lies in An Giang province in the Mekong Delta, in a landscape of rice fields, canals and scattered settlements along waterways. The ground is almost entirely flat, and on a map the dominant pattern is a lattice of straight irrigation canals, with houses and roads strung along their banks rather than gathered into a dense centre.
The name is known far beyond the delta because of the Óc Eo archaeological site, the remains of a port city of the Funan kingdom that flourished from roughly the first to the seventh centuries. Excavations have found objects linked to trade with India, China and the Mediterranean world, and the site is protected as a special national monument.
