Odendaalsrus Map Poster & Print
Odendaalsrus lies on the flat highveld of the northern Free State, a few kilometres north of Welkom. Its map shows a regular town centre of straight streets, separate residential areas spread around it and, in the surrounding land, the traces of mining: tailings, shafts and service roads laid across open grassland dotted with shallow pans.
The town began as a small farming settlement early in the twentieth century, but its character changed after gold was found nearby in the 1940s, a discovery that helped open the Free State goldfields. Mining brought rapid growth to Odendaalsrus and led to the founding of Welkom, which became the centre of the region.
An Odendaalsrus map poster keeps the landscape honest: an orderly town set on almost level ground, with the geometry of mining land around it. The absence of hills or rivers makes the street layout and the pale open spaces the whole subject of the print, which suits the minimalist style well.

Mining landscape
Around the town, tailings dams, mine sites and their access roads form large geometric shapes that interrupt the open veld and record the area's gold-mining history.
Pans and veld
The surrounding highveld is flat and open, marked by shallow seasonal pans that appear as smooth rounded outlines among the field boundaries.
