Oku lies high in the Bamenda Highlands of Cameroon's North-West Region, on the flanks of Mount Oku. This is the second-highest mountain in the country. On a map, the settlement is not a compact grid. Roads and tracks follow the contours, bending around ridges and spurs, and homesteads spread across the green slopes instead of gathering around a single centre.
Above the town is Lake Oku, a crater lake surrounded by montane forest. The Kilum-Ijim forest on the mountain is one of the largest remaining areas of highland forest in the region and is known for rare birds. Oku is also the seat of a traditional fondom, and the area is well known for its white honey, which has protected geographical status.
An Oku map poster shows a place shaped by its terrain. The street network is sparse and organic, and the lines of roads trace the mountain itself. The crater lake sits high on the mountain above the settlement. It is a rounded, still shape set apart from the scattered lines of the town.
