Oleśnica lies in Lower Silesia, a short distance east of Wrocław. Its historic centre follows the classic plan of a medieval Silesian town: a rectangular market square with a town hall in the middle, a grid of streets around it, and a line of defensive walls, significant parts of which still stand. On the map, the old town forms a compact oval surrounded by greenery.
The town's most important landmark is its castle, the former seat of the dukes of Oleśnica, which was rebuilt in the Renaissance and has an arcaded courtyard. It stands on the edge of the old town, next to the Basilica of St John the Apostle. The small Oleśnica river flows nearby.
