Olib belongs to the scattered archipelago off Zadar in northern Dalmatia, lying among neighbouring islands such as Silba and Premuda. It is small and low, without the high ridges of the larger Croatian islands. From above its outline is irregular, with shallow coves and small headlands, and its interior is a patchwork of fields, olive groves, macchia and old dry-stone walls dividing the land.
Life on the island centres on a single village of the same name, with a small harbour, a church and a compact grid of stone houses. Beyond it the road network soon thins out into farm tracks and footpaths leading to beaches and bays around the coast. Traffic is light, and much of the island is best crossed on foot.
That simplicity is what makes it appealing on paper.
