Ōmuta sits at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture, on the eastern shore of the Ariake Sea, facing its wide tidal flats. For more than a century the city was built around the Miike coal mine, once the largest in Japan. Railways, factories and port facilities connected pits to the harbour, and the city's layout still follows many of those industrial routes.
Several Miike sites, including Miike Port, Manda Pit and Miyanohara Pit, are part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution. The port's lock gate, built to keep ships afloat despite the sea's very large tides, still operates today and is one of the city's defining features.
