Opava lies on the Opava River in the north-east of the Czech Republic, a short distance from the Polish border. It is the historic centre of Czech Silesia and was once the capital of Austrian Silesia, when it was known as Troppau. From above, the old town is an oval of dense streets and squares, clearly separated from everything built later.
That separation comes from a green ring. Where the town fortifications once stood, a belt of parks and gardens now circles the historic core. On a map it reads as a soft, continuous band around the tight grid inside. The river runs to the north, and newer districts spread outward beyond the parks.
An Opava map poster records a city whose plan still tells its story. The Silesian Museum here, founded in 1814, is the oldest museum in the Czech Republic. In 1820 the town hosted the Congress of Troppau, where European powers met to discuss revolutions. Both are part of what the old oval represents on the wall.
