Ota lies in Ogun State, just beyond the northern edge of metropolitan Lagos, and has grown into one of the region's main industrial and residential centres. On the map the town spreads along its main roads, especially the Lagos–Abeokuta expressway and the road west toward the border at Idiroko, with neighbourhoods and industrial estates filling the land between them.
The older part of Ota, the traditional seat of the Awori people, sits at the heart of the town, with narrow and irregular streets around the palace of the Olota. Around it, newer districts have expanded quickly as factories, warehouses and housing developments followed the roads out of Lagos, and many residents commute daily toward the city.
At Canaanland, on the edge of the town, lie Covenant University and the Faith Tabernacle, one of the largest church auditoriums in the world, whose campus forms a distinct planned zone on the map.
