Ottawa sits on the south bank of the Ottawa River, which forms the border between Ontario and Quebec, with Gatineau directly across the water. On the map the river dominates the northern edge, wide and irregular, with islands, rapids and bridges linking the two provinces. Parliament Hill occupies a bluff above the river, where the downtown grid meets the water.
From the river, the Rideau Canal runs south through the heart of the city. Opened in 1832 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, its central stretch becomes a skating route every winter. It separates Centretown and the Glebe from Sandy Hill, with the Rideau River beyond. Further out, a broad Greenbelt of farmland and forest wraps around the older city before the suburbs resume.
Ottawa's streets follow a mostly regular grid, loosened by the curves of the river and the canal's winding course.
