Oudenaarde lies on the Scheldt in East Flanders. The river is the organising line on its map: it crosses the town in a series of bends, with a central market square just to its north. Old streets radiate from the Markt, and newer districts spread out along the valley floor. Beyond them the land rises into the Flemish Ardennes, a landscape of short, steep hills.
The Markt is dominated by the late-Gothic town hall, whose belfry is part of the UNESCO-listed ensemble of belfries of Belgium and France. Oudenaarde was a major centre of tapestry weaving in the sixteenth century, and it gave its name to a 1708 battle of the War of the Spanish Succession. The Church of Our Lady of Pamele stands on the riverbank.
Today the town is also closely tied to cycling. The Tour of Flanders finishes here, and its museum is in the centre. An Oudenaarde map poster shows why the race loves this ground: south of the Scheldt, narrow roads zigzag up the hills, and some of them are the cobbled climbs riders know by name.
