Oujda lies in the far north-east of Morocco, a short distance from the Algerian border, on the open Angad plain. With few natural obstacles around it, the city spreads outward in most directions. From above the older core stands out clearly: a compact medina with a tight mesh of lanes, still partly enclosed by walls and gates.
Around the medina, the districts of the French period and later decades bring straight boulevards, roundabouts and larger blocks, reaching toward newer residential areas and the university. On a map this makes a strong contrast between the organic centre and the more regular rings beyond it. Parks and wide avenues break up the outer city, and the plain stretches off toward distant hills.
Oujda is one of Morocco's oldest cities, usually dated to the tenth century, and it is the main city of the Oriental region. It is also known for its musical traditions, gharnati music among them.
