Ourém lies in northeastern Pará, in the Brazilian Amazon, on the bank of the Guamá River some distance inland from Belém. The town has a compact layout. A set of streets runs parallel to the river, others lead away from the water, and a small centre has grown outward along the roads to neighbouring municipalities.
It shares its name with the town of Ourém in Portugal, a reminder of the colonial practice of giving Portuguese place names to settlements in the Amazon. The region around it has changed over time, with areas of forest cleared for farming and cattle. The river is still the defining element, winding through the landscape in wide, slow bends.
