Ozumba de Alzate lies in the southeastern part of the State of Mexico, in the Amecameca region at the foot of the volcanoes Popocatépetl and Iztaccíhuatl. The town follows the classic colonial plan: a central plaza with the main church, surrounded by a grid of blocks extending outward and gradually loosening into fields and scattered houses as the ground rises toward the mountains.
The town's name honours José Antonio de Alzate y Ramírez, the eighteenth-century priest, scientist and journalist who was born here and became a leading figure of the Enlightenment in New Spain. Ozumba is also known for its sixteenth-century Franciscan convent, whose early mural paintings are of real interest to historians of colonial art.
