Pacho lies northwest of Bogotá in the department of Cundinamarca and serves as the main town of the Rionegro province. It sits on the western slopes of the Eastern Cordillera, and the map shows a compact grid of central streets set on a shelf of the mountainside, with roads descending in long curves and switchbacks toward the valleys and villages below.
Pacho has a place in Colombian industrial history. In the early nineteenth century it became the site of the Ferrería de Pacho, often cited as the first ironworks in the country, which used local ore and charcoal from the surrounding forests. Today the economy rests mostly on agriculture, including coffee, fruit and livestock raised on the steep hillsides.
A Pacho map poster captures the tension between order and terrain.
