Pacific Grove sits at the northern tip of the Monterey Peninsula in California, next to Monterey. It began in 1875 as a Methodist retreat, and the tent lots of that camp became the unusually small, regular parcels of the old town. Many Victorian cottages survive on them today.
On a map, the town is a neat grid bordered almost everywhere by water. The shoreline is rocky and irregular, with coves such as Lovers Point along the bay and open Pacific coast to the west. At the point stands the Point Pinos Lighthouse, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the West Coast.
