Padang Rengas lies in northern Perak, on the lowland corridor between Taiping and Kuala Kangsar. On a map it reads as a linear settlement. The houses and shops gather along the main road and the railway line, which run close to each other through a gap in the surrounding high ground. Past the last buildings, the street pattern thins into estate tracks and village lanes.
The ground around the town is mostly plantation land, so the surrounding area appears as long, even stretches broken by small streams and the odd kampung cluster. To the east the land drops toward the Perak River valley and the royal town of Kuala Kangsar. To the west the hills rise toward Taiping.
