Pakur is the headquarters of Pakur district in the Santhal Pargana division of Jharkhand, close to the border with West Bengal. From above, the town gathers around a railway line and a handful of main roads, with dense lanes near the centre and a looser spread of homes, ponds and fields toward the edges.
The area is known across eastern India for its stone. Quarries in the surrounding district supply black stone chips used in construction, and the trade has left its mark on the land, with roads and tracks leading out toward the workings. To the west, the terrain rises toward the Rajmahal Hills, giving the flat plain around the town a firm backdrop.
