Palawan is one of the longest islands in the Philippines, a narrow strip stretching for well over four hundred kilometres between the South China Sea to the west and the Sulu Sea to the east. On the map it looks like a blade pointing toward Borneo. It has a mountainous spine, a single highway along much of its length, and a coastline that breaks apart toward the north.
Puerto Princesa, the main city, sits on a sheltered bay on the Sulu Sea side, about halfway along the island. Farther north the land splits into karst headlands, coves and offshore islets around El Nido, where tall limestone cliffs rise from shallow water. Much of the island is protected. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, includes a river that flows for several kilometres through a limestone cave before reaching the sea.
