Palo Alto stretches from the San Francisco Bay to the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains, and its map records that climb. The Baylands along the shore are a mesh of sloughs and marsh channels, the flat middle of the city is filled with a dense residential grid, and to the west the streets thin out into winding roads and open hillside preserves.
The city takes its name from El Palo Alto, a tall redwood that still stands beside San Francisquito Creek, which forms the northern boundary. Palo Alto is often called the birthplace of Silicon Valley.
