Palo lies on the eastern coast of Leyte, just south of Tacloban, facing the open water of Leyte Gulf. From above the town is defined by its shoreline: a long, gently curving beach with the settled area running inland behind it. The town centre is a compact grid near the coastal highway, and beyond it roads lead west across flat farmland toward the hills of the interior.
Palo holds a well-known place in Second World War history. The American landings on Leyte in October 1944 came ashore along this coast, and the MacArthur Landing Memorial near Red Beach marks the event. The town was also among the places hit hardest by Typhoon Haiyan in 2013.
