Panna lies in the Bundelkhand region of northern Madhya Pradesh, on an upland marked by plateaus, scarps and forest. From above, the town is compact, with a network of streets and lanes gathered on the higher ground and roads leaving in a few directions toward the surrounding hills and villages.
The area is known across India for diamonds: the Majhgawan mine near Panna is widely described as the country's only active mechanised diamond mine. Just beyond the town lies Panna National Park, a tiger reserve cut through by the Ken River, whose gorges and forests make the region one of the wilder landscapes in central India.
