Paramaribo, the capital of Suriname, lies on the western bank of the Suriname River, a short distance inland from the Atlantic. The historic centre follows the river bank, with streets laid out on a Dutch colonial grid that runs down to the water. Near the waterfront stands Fort Zeelandia, and next to it the open green of Independence Square and the Presidential Palace.
The inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its white-painted wooden buildings, including the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul, one of the largest wooden structures in the Americas. Beyond the centre, the city spreads over flat, low-lying land cut by canals and drainage channels. Downstream, the Jules Wijdenbosch Bridge crosses the river to the eastern bank.

Fort Zeelandia and Independence Square sit at the northern end of the historic centre. Together they form a recognisable open space next to the river.
