Pātan in northern Gujarat was once Anhilwad Patan, capital of the Chavda and Solanki dynasties and one of the major cities of western India for centuries. From above, the old city is still recognisable. A tight core of lanes and courtyard houses is enclosed by the remains of fortifications, with newer districts spreading outward along the main roads.
The best known monument is Rani ki Vav, an eleventh-century stepwell with elaborate carved galleries. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby is the Sahastralinga Talav, a large historic reservoir, and together they form distinct shapes on a Pātan map poster.
The town is also famous for Patola, double-ikat silk saris woven by a handful of families using techniques passed down through generations. The narrow lanes of the old pols, where many of those families live, create the finest detail on the map.
