Patrātu lies in the Ramgarh district of Jharkhand, on the uneven, wooded Chota Nagpur plateau west of Ranchi. The map is shaped by water and terrain. A large reservoir spreads across the valley, its shoreline breaking into fingers where it meets the hills. Residential streets and industrial sites gather on the flatter ground nearby.
The town grew around the Patratu Thermal Power Station, and the planned township roads still show that origin. Several blocks of housing are laid out along neat, repeated streets. Just outside town, the Patratu Valley road climbs through the hills in a series of tight hairpin bends that has become a favourite drive and viewpoint for visitors from Ranchi.
A Patrātu map poster brings these contrasting elements together: the orderly township, the broad reservoir and the switchbacks of the valley road.
