Pau sits on a high terrace above the Gave de Pau, a fast mountain river flowing west from the Pyrenees. From above, the old town occupies the edge of that terrace, with the château at its western end and the Boulevard des Pyrénées running along the escarpment, looking south across the valley toward the mountains.
The château is the birthplace of Henri IV, the king who ended France's wars of religion. In the nineteenth century, Pau became a winter resort popular with British visitors, who left behind villas, parks and one of the oldest golf clubs in continental Europe. The city's streets also host a motor racing Grand Prix held on a street circuit.
A Pau map poster shows how the city is arranged around its view. The dense historic centre clings to the terrace, a small funicular links the boulevard with the station below, and the wide river and its green banks separate the city from Jurançon on the other side. Newer districts spread northward across flatter ground.
