Paulino Neves lies on the coast of Maranhão in northeastern Brazil, between the larger Lençóis Maranhenses to the west and the Parnaíba delta to the east. It is a gateway to the area known as the Pequenos Lençóis. This is a landscape of white sand dunes, seasonal lagoons and rivers that reach the Atlantic through the sand.
On a map, the town is small and compact, placed along a river that runs toward the sea. Around it, the street network soon gives way to open, almost empty terrain. There are few roads in the dunes, so the map's white space shows the geography as much as the lines do.
