Pehowa lies in Kurukshetra district in northern Haryana, on level farmland cut by irrigation channels and seasonal streams. It is one of the region's oldest religious centres, associated with the ancient Prithudaka tirtha, and its layout still reflects that role, with a dense older core close to the water and newer growth along the roads.
Pilgrims come to Pehowa to perform rites for deceased ancestors on the banks of the Saraswati, and family genealogists here have kept written records of visiting families for generations. The ghats and temple precincts form the heart of the town, where narrow streets converge on the bank before opening into markets and residential lanes.
