Peine sits on the flat North German plain between Hanover and Braunschweig. From above it reads as a tight core of older streets, ringed by later housing, industrial land and open fields. The small river Fuhse runs through the town. To the north, the Mittelland Canal cuts a straight, deliberate line across the landscape, a clear horizontal stroke on any print.
Steel has shaped the town for well over a century. The works on its edge show up as broad blocks of rail sidings and long halls, a coarser texture beside the finer street pattern of the centre.
