Perico is a municipality in the eastern part of Matanzas Province, in the level agricultural country of central-western Cuba. From above the town shows the regular pattern common to many Cuban provincial towns: straight streets crossing at right angles and forming even blocks. Fields press close on every side, so the built area stands out as a clear rectangle on open ground.
The surrounding land has long been worked for sugar cane and other crops, and railways were laid across the region to carry the harvest. That history can still be read in the map, where tracks and roads run straight across the plain and settlements sit at regular intervals along them. Perico is one of these rail-and-farm towns.
