Picos is one of the main cities of southern Piauí, in northeastern Brazil, and a long-established trading centre for the surrounding sertão. It lies in the valley of the Guaribas River. Its position where important highways meet has made it a regular stop for traffic between the interior of the Northeast and the coast.
On a map, the river valley organises everything. The city spreads along both banks of the Guaribas, with the older centre near the water and newer neighbourhoods climbing the low slopes around it. Highways enter from several directions and converge on the town. Beyond the urban edge, the terrain turns into broken hills and dry scrubland.
