Pinhal Novo lies in the municipality of Palmela, in the Setúbal district south of Lisbon, on the low, sandy plain that stretches behind the Tagus estuary. Its name means new pine grove, a reference to the pine woodland that once covered much of this land. Today the town is a mix of streets, fields, vineyards and remaining patches of pine.
The town grew as a railway centre, and it remains an important junction where lines toward Setúbal, the Alentejo and Lisbon meet. Commuter trains cross the Tagus to the capital over the 25 de Abril Bridge. On the map, the tracks cut straight across the town, and the streets are organised on either side of them.
