Pisco lies on Peru's southern coast in the Ica region, where the Pisco River reaches the Pacific. The map shows a sharp contrast. The town and its surrounding valley are a band of streets and irrigated fields, while beyond them lies bare coastal desert. The shoreline runs south towards the Paracas peninsula, and the port area of San Martín sits on the bay near the peninsula.
The town gave its name to pisco, the grape brandy produced in the valleys of southern Peru. In 2007 a strong earthquake caused severe damage to Pisco, destroying many historic buildings around the main square. Much of the town has since been rebuilt, and it remains a base for visits to the Paracas National Reserve and the Ballestas Islands offshore.
