Piteå lies on the coast of Norrbotten in northern Sweden, where the Pite River reaches the Gulf of Bothnia. On the map, water is everywhere: bays reach into the land, islands and peninsulas break up the coastline, and the town centre is drawn between inlets, connected by bridges and causeways.
The town was moved to its present site in the seventeenth century, and the compact centre still has a clear, orderly layout of streets with some older wooden buildings. Around it, residential areas spread onto neighbouring peninsulas and islands, while forest and water fill much of the surrounding map.
