Pokhara lies in a valley in central Nepal, with the Annapurna range rising sharply to the north. On clear days the pointed summit of Machhapuchhre dominates the view from the city. Phewa Lake lies on the western side, and the Lakeside district along its shore has become the base for travellers heading into the mountains, including the Annapurna Circuit and Annapurna Base Camp.
The Seti Gandaki River runs through the city in a remarkably narrow gorge, in places only a few metres wide yet deep enough to vanish from view. Above the southern shore of Phewa Lake stands the World Peace Pagoda, looking back across the water. Several smaller lakes dot the wider valley.
