Pombal Map Poster & Print
Pombal is in the district of Leiria in central Portugal, between Coimbra and Leiria. Above the town, on a hill, stands its castle, founded in the twelfth century by the Knights Templar under Gualdim Pais. From the castle, the old town slopes down to the valley of the Arunca river, and newer districts spread across the flatter land beyond.
The town's name is known far beyond Portugal because of the Marquis of Pombal, the eighteenth-century statesman who rebuilt Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. He spent his final years in Pombal and died here in 1782. The town has a museum dedicated to him.
A Pombal map poster shows a clear relationship between hill and valley: the castle high on its rise, the historic centre below, and the river and main roads along the valley. The railway and the A1 motorway, which link Lisbon and Porto, pass nearby and add long straight lines to the composition.
