Pomerode lies in the Itajaí Valley of Santa Catarina, close to Blumenau. From above, it is not a dense grid but a long, green settlement that follows the course of the Rio do Testo and its side valleys. Roads run beside the water with houses and small farms along them, and wooded hills rise on both sides, giving the town an elongated, branching shape.
Immigrants from Pomerania and other German regions settled the town in the nineteenth century, and it is often described as the most German town in Brazil. Half-timbered houses in the enxaimel style survive in the countryside, many families still speak German, and the town holds a well-known Easter festival, the Osterfest.
