Port Saint Lucie lies on Florida's Atlantic side, in St. Lucie County, a few miles inland from the barrier islands. It is one of the clearest examples of a postwar planned city: from above, hundreds of curving residential streets form looping patterns across flat ground, crossed by a network of drainage canals and a few straight arterial roads. There is little in the way of a traditional downtown.
The city was laid out in the late 1950s by the General Development Corporation, which sold lots across a vast area of platted streets, and it was incorporated in 1961. Growth accelerated in later decades, making it one of the largest cities in Florida by population. Interstate 95 and Florida's Turnpike run north–south through the city, forming its strongest lines.
The North Fork of the St. Lucie River winds through the eastern part of the city in a natural, meandering line that contrasts with the engineered streets. The North Fork of the St. Lucie River meanders through the east of the city, its soft curves and wetlands standing apart from the geometry of the suburbs.
Canals and highways
Drainage canals run in long straight lines across the city, while I-95 and Florida's Turnpike cut north to south, giving the map its main structure.
