Port Shepstone sits where the Umzimkulu River, one of the larger rivers of KwaZulu-Natal, reaches the Indian Ocean. From above, the broad river mouth is the first thing you see: a wide channel that breaks the straight line of the coast and splits the town into a northern and a southern bank.
The town follows the shore rather than spreading inland. Residential streets run in short, curving loops over the coastal ridges, and the main roads stay parallel to the beach. Behind them the national road cuts a firmer line. Beyond that, the grid thins out into sugar cane country and scattered settlements on the hills of the South Coast.
