Porta Westfalica is named after the gateway it occupies: a narrow gap where the Weser river breaks through the hills between the Wiehengebirge to the west and the Wesergebirge to the east. From above, two long wooded ridges run toward each other and stop at the river. Roads, railway and houses crowd into the gap, and the land opens out onto the North German Plain beyond.
The town was formed in 1973 by merging a number of villages, so its map shows several separate settlements rather than a single centre. On the Wittekindsberg, above the western side of the gap, stands the Kaiser Wilhelm Monument, completed in 1896. It is visible from far across the plain and is one of the best-known monuments in Westphalia.
