Porto Ferreira is in the interior of São Paulo state, on the banks of the Mogi-Guaçu River. As the name suggests, it began at a river crossing, a porto or landing on the Mogi-Guaçu, and the river still defines one side of the town on the map. The central streets form a grid that runs up from the water.
The town is widely known for ceramics and holds the title of Brazil's national capital of artistic and decorative ceramics. Workshops and shops selling pottery line the main roads, particularly along the highway approaches, where the town meets passing traffic.
From above, the grid spreads across gently rolling land, with newer neighbourhoods at the edges and sugarcane and other farmland beyond. The river bends past with a wooded strip along its banks.
