Porto Nacional lies in the Brazilian state of Tocantins, on the Tocantins River south of the state capital, Palmas. It began in the eighteenth century as a river crossing and trading post linked to the gold routes of central Brazil, and the older streets still run close to the water, while newer districts extend inland in a looser grid.
Its historic centre, with the Cathedral of Nossa Senhora das Mercês, is protected as national heritage. In the early 2000s the filling of the Luís Eduardo Magalhães dam reservoir raised the river into a broad lake along the town, turning the waterfront into one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
