Posse lies in the northeastern corner of Goiás, close to the state line with Bahia. The surrounding country is cerrado, the tropical savanna of central Brazil, with wide horizons, seasonal streams and the escarpments of the Serra Geral not far to the east. The town serves as a regional centre for a large and thinly populated area.
