Póvoa de Varzim sits on the open Atlantic coast north of Porto. From above, the town is shaped by one straight line: a long sandy beach backed by a seafront avenue. The street grid runs parallel to that edge, fairly dense near the water and looser inland, where it gives way to fields and scattered parishes.
The harbour at the southern end breaks the smooth coastline with breakwaters that show up clearly as angular lines on the map. Póvoa grew as a fishing community, and its fishermen once marked their boats and belongings with siglas, a system of simple carved signs. The writer Eça de Queirós was born here in 1845.
