Psara lies in the northeastern Aegean, a short distance west of Chios, with the smaller islet of Antipsara beyond it. The island is bare, hilly and rocky, with an irregular outline of coves and points. Almost all of its life is gathered in one place, a harbour village in the southwest whose tight streets face the sea.
Psara's fame is out of proportion to its size. Its merchant fleet played a major role in the Greek War of Independence, and in 1824 Ottoman forces attacked the island and largely destroyed it. Dionysios Solomos mourned the event in a short, well-known epigram, and the island's name still carries weight in Greece today.
A Psara map poster presents the island as it is: a small shape in open water, with one dense cluster of streets and very little else. That economy is its strength.
