This Pudukkottai lies just west of Madurai in southern Tamil Nadu. It should not be confused with the larger district town of the same name further to the north-east. The name is shared by several places in the state. The settlement is small and closely connected to the villages and roads around it, on the plains that stretch away from the city towards the Western Ghats.
