Puerto López lies on the north bank of the Meta River in Colombia's Llanos Orientales, the vast tropical grasslands east of the Andes. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks on the riverbank. Main roads lead west toward Villavicencio and east across the plains, and the broad, braided river runs along its southern edge.
The Puerto López map poster is built on the contrast between the orderly town and the loose natural forms around it. The Meta divides into channels and sandbars, gallery forest follows the streams, and flat savanna stretches to the horizon, crossed by only a few straight roads and property boundaries.
Near the town, on a low hill called Alto de Menegua, an obelisk marks what is traditionally regarded as the geographic centre of Colombia. Puerto López also grew as a river port and cattle-ranching centre for the Llanos. Its position between the river and the plains is clearly visible from above.
