Puerto San José lies on Guatemala's Pacific coast in Escuintla department, south of Guatemala City. The coastline here is long and nearly straight, and the town stretches along it in a narrow band, with the beach on one side and the Chiquimulilla Canal, a coastal waterway, running parallel behind it. The map is shaped almost entirely by those two lines.
For much of its history this was one of the country's main Pacific ports, with a pier handling cargo from the nineteenth century onward. Port traffic later moved to nearby Puerto Quetzal, and San José became better known as a beach town, a place where families from the capital come to spend weekends by the sea.
The town centre sits close to the shore, with streets running inland in short blocks toward the canal, and houses and hotels strung along the beachfront to either side.
