Pujali lies on the east bank of the Hooghly in South 24 Parganas, downstream from Kolkata. From above, the river is the dominant shape: a wide band of water along one side of the map, with the town's lanes, compounds and small tanks packed in behind it. The area around Pujali has long been a mix of riverside industry and residential settlement, part of the working belt that spreads south along the Hooghly from the city.
