Punalūr lies in Kollam district, Kerala, where the Kallada river emerges from the foothills of the Western Ghats. From above, the river is the defining feature, winding through the town with roads and houses following both banks. The land rises towards the east, and plantations and forest press close to the town's edges.
Punalūr is known for its suspension bridge across the Kallada, built in the late nineteenth century and now a protected historic structure. The town also has a long association with the paper industry, and it serves as a gateway to the hill routes leading to Thenmala and on towards Tamil Nadu.
