Pune stands on the Deccan Plateau, where the Mula and Mutha rivers meet and continue together toward the east. The rivers draw the map's main lines. The old city lies beside the Mutha, a dense arrangement of neighbourhoods known as peths, several of them named after days of the week, such as Shukrawar and Budhwar.
Within the old city, Shaniwar Wada still marks the historic centre with its fortified walls. It was the eighteenth-century seat of the Peshwas, who led the Maratha Empire. To the east lies the cantonment, with a looser plan of wide roads and military land. Further south, Parvati Hill and its temple complex form one of the few high points inside the city.
Pune has long been called the Oxford of the East for its universities and colleges, and it has grown quickly on the back of information technology and the car industry. Its western suburbs now reach villages of a generation ago, around business parks such as Hinjewadi. The peths
The historic wards around Shaniwar Wada form a tight, irregular grid of narrow streets and small blocks. Their texture is much finer than the planned areas around them.
Parvati Hill
South of the old centre, the hill and its temple stand out as a compact green rise, with the city's streets wrapping around its base.
